Purpose:
The Education Committee is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within our schools by promoting awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diversity in all its forms. Our purpose is to develop and expand our Promoting Respect Workshops alongside any other programs in order to empower individuals within our community to recognize, celebrate, and leverage differences as strengths, while actively working to dismantle barriers and biases. Through education, advocacy, and collaborative initiatives, we strive to cultivate a culture of respect, empathy, and belonging where every voice is valued and heard.
Membership:
The board will appoint the committee chair and members. Members will serve a term of one year with the option to serve up to two terms. The committee shall have a minimum of five members and a maximum of ten members.
Job Description:
A GMDC Education Committee Member is an integral part of our organizations commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a member of this committee, you will play a vital role in promoting awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diversity among our community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with fellow committee members to develop and implement initiatives, including Promoting Respect Workshops, that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.
- Assist in organizing and facilitating workshops, training sessions, and educational programs focused on diversity education and cultural competence.
- Research and stay updated on current trends, best practices, and resources related to diversity, equity, and inclusion to inform committee initiatives.
- Engage with members of diverse communities to ensure their perspectives and needs are represented in committee initiatives.
- Serve as a resource and support system for individuals within the organization.
- Collaborate with other committees or departments to integrate diversity and inclusion principles into organizational policies, practices, and programs as needed.
- Regularly communicate updates, progress, and challenges to the committee chair or designated leadership team.
Qualifications:
- Passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a solid commitment to fostering an inclusive environment in our schools and community.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Knowledge of diversity education principles, cultural competency, and best practices in promoting inclusion.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to collective decision-making processes.
- Willingness to continuously learn and adapt to new information and perspectives.
- Previous experience in diversity-related work or education is preferred but not required.
